No dia 26 de março, às 14h, na Sala de Atos do Ispa, Joachim Krueger, professor da Universidade de Brown (EUA), revela como heurísticas sociais moldam as nossas decisões. “Heuristic Trust” desvenda os atalhos mentais que determinam em quem escolhemos confiar.

Interpersonal trust requires decisions under uncertainty (not risk!); the probability of the other person reciprocating is unknown and can at best be approached only with a rough estimate. Therefore, it is difficult, if not impossible, to optimize these decisions in rigorous and coherent ways. The use of social heuristics remains the trustor’s best available means to come to a satisfactory decision. In this chapter, I review the findings of a research project spanning a decade and a half. This work has identified a set of social heuristics people use (or should use) when deciding whether to trust. Among these heuristics are social projection, social distance, all-or-nothing, and the general normative environment. This research is focused on one-shot decisions in experimental trust games, a context in which uncertainty is greatest.

Biografia

Joachim Krueger obteve o seu doutoramento na Universidade de Oregon, nos Estados Unidos da América, em 1988 e concluiu o pós-doutoramento no Instituto Max Planck, em Berlim, antes de se juntar à Universidade de Brown (EUA) em 1991. A sua investigação incide sobre social judgment e decision-making, explorando temas como self-perception, strategic interpersonal behavior e intergroup relations. Integra os Conselhos Editoriais da Personality and Social Psychology Review e do American Journal of Psychology. O seu trabalho cruza a psicologia cognitiva-social, a economia comportamental e o comportamento organizacional, com a confiança interpessoal, o poder e a liderança a assumirem um papel central na sua investigação e ensino.
