Abstract

Empathic abilities serve important functions in human social interaction, bringing people together and motivating them to help others and be considerate or even selfless. But how early in ontogeny can empathy for others be observed? And when does it begin to show trait-like consistency or to predict later adjustment? Addressing these and related questions, my talk summarizes key findings from several studies regarding the onset of empathy during infancy, the parenting predictors of early individual differences in empathy, and the links between early empathy and subsequent child outcomes.

Maayan Davidov, Ph.D, completed the BA in psychology and education at Tel-Aviv University, and the MA and Ph.D. in psychology at the University of Toronto. She is a faculty member at the Paul Baerwald School of Social Work and Social Welfare (Hebrew University of Jerusalem) since 2007, and she is currently serving as head of the Doctoral Program at the school.

Her research focuses on parent-child relationships and children’s socio-emotional development.
